Good Idea, Wrong Size: Why Most Traders Blow Up
A great thesis, a clean setup. You’ve done the work. You’re confident. And none of it matters if you get the size wrong.
Position sizing is the most consequential decision a trader makes. The entire trading content ecosystem obsesses over what to buy and when to buy it, then stops.
We’d take an average entry with perfect sizing over a perfect entry with reckless sizing, every single time. Proper size keeps you in the game long enough for edge to compound. Bad size removes you from the game entirely, no matter how good the idea was.
The Four Warning Signs Your Size Is Wrong
Forget position sizing calculators for a moment. Your own behavior is the most reliable indicator that you’re carrying too much risk. Here are the four signals that something is off:
You can’t hold your stop. If you know your invalidation level but find yourself unable to execute when price gets there (moving the stop, rationalizing, hoping), the position is too large for your emotional capacity.
You’re checking the position obsessively. Refreshing every few minutes, unable to focus on anything else. That’s anxiety produced by inappropriate size.
The trade is dictating your mood. If a green day makes you euphoric and a red day makes you irritable or despondent, the position owns you. You don’t own it.
You need it to work right now. Urgency around a single trade is almost always a sizing problem. Properly sized positions give you patience. Oversized ones demand immediate validation.
When a position is appropriately sized, noise feels like noise. You can absorb a drawdown, evaluate the thesis with clarity, and make rational decisions about whether to hold, add, or cut. When it’s oversized, every tick against you triggers a fight-or-flight response that has nothing to do with market analysis.
Size for the path, not the destination. Expect ugly, wiggly, non-linear routes. The destination might be right, but the journey will test you, and your sizing needs to survive that test.
Use the sleep test: The sleep test is exactly what it sounds like. If a position is ruining your sleep, distracting you from the rest of your life, or hijacking your emotional state, you need to trim until it doesn’t. Your body signals sizing problems before your mind does.
Size isn’t everything. But it’s the lever that makes everything else work over time. Most blowups don’t come from bad ideas. They come from good ideas at the wrong size.
